fill station in your own house! from AGDMarch 7, 2010 Tom Kaye, the legendary paintball designer behind AGD and the Automag has returned to paintball with, in my opinion, the most exciting paintball announcement in the last few years. He has anounced plans to build a miniature paintball air compressor that will run off electricity and a cheap shop compressor (which only will run occasionally) and will be able to fill compressed air tanks to 4500psi. The concept is simple - create a low-power, low-cost pump that will fill tanks to high pressures over a long period of time. Current guesses are that a 68/45 could be filled in about 4 hours. While the slow fill time will mean you can't refill a tank between games, you will be able to fill a tank overnight without paying several thousand dollars as the expected retail price is $300-$400. For those of you who use compressed air, you know how its reliability, consistency and ease of use make it the preferred (and sometimes required) air for competitive paintball. You also know how difficult it is to keep your tanks full when you're not at a professional field. This new compressor solves that problem by allowing you to play (or tinker) where you like and fill your tanks at home. With the expected cost of $0.05 an hour to operate, filling a tank will now cost twenty cents - less than the gas to drive to a paintball field or store.I will definitely be in line to get one of these when they are released. I'm a big fan of Tom's work at AGD (and still own some of his products) and I'm an even bigger fan of the idea of filling my compressed air tanks without going to a scuba store or paintball field. The mini-compressor is still several months from production, but you can view a video of a prototype to see what it's all about. Q: How much will it cost? A: Currently the target price is 3-400 dollars retail but this could change. Q: How fast will it fill a tank? A: It will fill a 68 cubic inch tank in about 4 hours to 4500 psi. Q: I hear it needs another compressor? A: Yes, it needs an 85 psi input from a shop compressor for maximum fill rate. If you don’t use a shop compressor it will take 6 times longer to fill a tank. Q: What shop compressor can I use? A: Almost ANY shop compressor that puts out at least 85 psi at 1 CFM or more will work fine. The mini-compressor takes very little air and a shop compressor will only kick on a few times. Small shop compressors are so cheap it didn’t make sense to try and build one into the mini-compressor. Q: How many CFM does the mini-compressor use when pumping? A: It takes about 0.04 CFM which is nothing. Q: Can I use a compressed air tank instead of a shop compressor? A: Yes you can. Some thing like a portable air tank for filling tires should work but it needs to be big enough to maintain some type of pressure during the 4 hour fill time. Q: Can I fill a scuba tank? A: Yes but you have to provide a fill hose and attachment fittings. I estimate it will fill an 80 cubic foot scuba tank to 3000 psi in about 24 hours. Q: Can I use a low pressure scuba with a regulated output to 85 psi to feed the mini-compressor? A: Yes but we don’t recommend it because a high pressure regulator is more expensive than a small shop compressor that can be bought new for 80 bucks. Q: How much noise does it make? A: Not that much but its not completely silent. Its less noisy than your mothers sewing machine. Q: Does it turn off by itself? A: Yes but the pressure is preset at the factory. You have to buy either the 4500 or 3000 psi model. Q: What else do I need to get to make it work? A: To keep the cost down we only supply a stainless nipple output from the compressor. This is the same nipple you find on your paintball markers tank. You need to get a hose to connect what ever type of tank you have, scuba, paintball, pellet gun, to the compressor. Q: What size is it? A: Its about 16” wide, 12” deep and 6 ½ inches tall. The picture on Facebook shows a pencil for scale in front of the compressor. Q: When will it be available? A: We are making the pre-production prototypes now and hope to have the first run out within two months. Q: Is there any water or particle filtration on the mini-compressor? A: No there is not to keep costs down. You can put a water trap between the shop compressor and the mini-compressor if that’s a concern. Q: How much electricity will it take? A: It will cost less than 5 cents an hour to run the compressor. ***** update 2-16-10 ******* Q: Can I put say 1000 psi into it to make it fill faster? A: No not 1000 psi because it will overload the first piston and stall the motor. It will probably handle up to about 100 psi or a bit more which will give you a faster fill. Q: Will it be sold in Europe? A: YES, working on the distribution now. Q: Does it have a degas valve to disconnect the tank? A: Yes, the knob to degas the line is directly above the output port. You screw it in to release the pressure. ******* update 2-17-10 ****** Q: Will it be convertable from 3k to 4.5k? A: No, there are too many liability issues. Q: Any safety features built in? Yes, there is a standard replaceable burst disk built into the compressor. The shut-off system is made to shut down if the spring breaks, if the lubrication gets too low and increases the friction, or if there is an overpressure in the first stage. If your filling a paintball tank, there is a backcheck valve there, and two others in the compressor to prevent 4500 psi from getting back into your fill compressor. Q: Who is behind the design and production? A: Tom Kaye owner of Airgun Designs is responsible for the development of the compressor. He is getting back into the paintball business after 5 years in retirement. Q: Is Tom Kaye looking older? A: Yes but he can still kick your ass!! |

Ask the NPPL: Rich Telford answers your questions!February 2, 2010
Taken From propaintball.com Last week we asked you to submit your questions for Rich Telford on a wide range of NPPL & 7-man related issues. Read on for the latest paintball news regarding the NPPL, paintball player classifications, banned paintball colors, modifications to the format and a few words on the new pro paintball teams. Ben S. asks; will the NPPL be utilizing the APPA ranking system? And if so, will the USPL be honoring the PSP classifications now that the PSP has changed its guidelines? Rich: We are currently considering two different options with one being the APPA and the other being a company called XTRM. XTRM has a registration and classification system for other extreme sports, and it has a lot of other cool features. Regardless of who we choose to handle our registration, we’re hopeful that we can work with the APPA to keep all player classifications in one place. PPB: Will we see modifications to the 7-man format such as a best of 3 or something similar to Millennium? Rich: We currently use a best of 3 formant in the quarter finals, semi finals, and finals (only semi-finals and finals for Pro Division). The concept of using that format in all rounds of play has been discussed, but no decision has been reached at this time. PPB: What improvements will the NPPL implementing this season over last season? Rich: One of the things we are doing that I am most excited about is combining our Chicago event with one of the biggest and best scenario events out there. This crossover could be huge for the industry, bridging the gap between the tournament and recreational player. Al asks; With all of the recent buzz regarding .50 cal and the potential costs savings (and increased paintballs in your hoppers), does the NPPL/USPL plan to allow for multiple calibers? Rich: The NPPL is more than happy to allow 50 cal paintballs at the events as long as there are no insurance or safety issues. We are working to make sure there will be no issues with goggles or netting by allowing 50 cal balls. We also have to see if we would have to make any rule changes or division adjustments. DJ Whitacker asks; Will the NPPL be willing to put another event in the southeast (Georgia, Florida, the Carolina’s) in the near future? Rich: With only four events, we can’t be everywhere. We look for the best venues we can find, as well as areas that can support the event. We will go wherever there are enough teams to justify being there. We would love to have an event somewhere in the south, we just need the demand to be there from the teams and the right venue. Jmetz asks; Are there any efforts to promote NPPL layouts at local fields across the country? Obviously there are plenty of fields out there using PSP layouts, and most of them change the moment PSP releases a new layout for events. Is this something entirely up to local fields, or does NPPL have a plan for promoting the format so it just doesn’t plain die out because of lack of exposure? Thanks! Rich: We release our fields weeks before the event, and hope that fields set them up so teams can play. I do like the idea of doing some sort of program where we can help fields do this. SplattDaddy asks; Why wouldn’t the NPPL go to a “race-to” format? And as a follow up, ViciousPlaya inquires as to if a 7-man “race-to” format has been considered? Rich: We have talked about using a “race-to” format, and it’s a real possibility. The NPPL has been doing it on Sunday for a long time. Right now we are focused on getting together a group of players and industry leaders to focus on just this kind of topic. We want to try and get as much input as possible from as many people as possible, and then move forward. PPB: What can you tell us about the two new pro paintball teams that have been rumored? Rich: Not all that much. I have some general information. There is a team from Canada that have some Impact players on the roster who will be playing. You guys all know Entourage and the Naughty Dogs, and we haven’t made a decision one way or another on the other teams that have applied. PPB: There has been a rumor floating around that KEE or another manufacture of paintballs would be selling their brand exclusively at all NPPL events. Is this idea still being considered? Rich: The NPPL is really excited to be working with KEE this season. KEE has really stepped up and gone out of their way to support the league and the teams. Their deal is to be a paint sponsor for the league, and it is not exclusive. I do know that a company must sponsor the league for their paint to be used. And speaking of paint, yellow is not going to be a protected color for 2010. On a lighter note - CitrusMaximus asks; Who do you think would win in a fist fight – Ghandi or Jesus? Rich: This is a tough one, but Ghandi was a pacifist and Jesus believed in an eye for an eye. On the other hand, a little known fact is that martial arts started in India, so Ghandi might have used something like Aikido to defend himself leaving Jesus wondering what happened. PPB: Anything you would like to share? Rich: Yes. First, thanks for this opportunity. I’m a big fan of the site, and I check this and Ballers everyday to get my daily does of what’s going on. Secondly, there is a lot of negativity and bitter people out there. Don’t be one of those people. Emotions run high because we all feel so strongly about paintball. In the end though, it’s all paintball so support it. 3-man, 5-man, 7-man—it’s just paintball so if you love the sport then support it. If you can’t so that, at least don’t try to tear it down. There has been more damage done to our sport in the last 3-5 years than we could possible imagine. We have set ourselves back into the stone ages. That’s all I have. See you at the next event. About Rich Telford: When not captaining pro paintball team Sacramento XSV, Rich Telford works with the National Professional Paintball League and assists his wife, Gina, in running Extreme Paintball, a paintball store and field located in Modesto, CA. Special thanks to SplatMagazine for the photograph of Rich Telford. |

The team will shoot Ego and Geo markers in the coming season. 21st January 2010 – Planet Eclipse HQ: Planet Eclipse are thrilled to announce that Dynasty, the most prolific team in the history of paintball, have joined the Eclipse Family for the 2010 season and beyond. The agreement will see Dynasty, one of the most consistent performers in Professional Paintball in the past decade, using a mixture of arguably the most consistent performing markers; Eclipse Geos and Eclipse Egos, throughout the 2010 Season in their quest to remain the Worlds number one team. In 2010, Dynasty will be dominating the Professional Divisions of the NPPL and PSP in the US as well as representing Eclipse throughout Europe and the Rest of the World. Understandably excited, this is what both camps had to say about the news: “What was already shaping up to be a good 2010 has just turned into a great 2010! We are delighted to be associated with Dynasty and their Worldwide presence on and off the field” -Ian “Jacko” Parsons, Planet Eclipse “Eclipse have an outstanding presence in competitive paintball and we’re honored to have them as our marker sponsor for 2010.
